Bipartisan Women Senators Head to Arctic to Reassure Allies
The senators will visit four Arctic nations to discuss allied security, climate impacts and military challenges as China and Russia increase activity there.
Departing Friday, a bipartisan group of eight female senators led by Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen begins a diplomatic tour of Arctic nations including Canada, Greenland, Svalbard, and Iceland.
The trip seeks to reassure allies amid President Donald Trump's 'go-it-alone' stance, as Russia and China increase activity in the High North where climate change is thinning ice and creating trade competition.
Comprising entirely women, the delegation includes Sens. Cindy Hyde Smith, Katie Britt, and Cynthia Lummis and will visit Indigenous communities and military sites where aircraft hangars are required due to extreme Arctic cold.
Senator Shaheen told The Associated Press, "We will reassure our allies," noting that research shows agreements involving women at the negotiating table have a better chance of lasting longer.
Lawmakers are pushing to include language in this year's defense legislation preventing the Trump administration from withdrawing military commitments to NATO allies, following earlier efforts to protect members from potential attacks.
