Govt to Launch Cooperative Life Insurance Company, Expand Bharat Taxi to 500 Cities: Amit Shah
Amit Shah said the plan will expand cooperative services and support a sector that already includes about 8.5 lakh cooperatives and more than 30 crore members.
On Monday, July 6, 2026, Union Minister Amit Shah announced a cooperative life insurance company to boost sector growth, building on the successful "Bharat Taxi" model set to expand into 500 cities within two years.
Marking the 5th Foundation Day, Shah said the Ministry provided a "lifeline" to a "neglected movement" during Congress rule, clarifying that policy-making, not State interference, defines its role.
The Ministry transferred 135 godowns with 75,000 tonnes capacity, inaugurated 85 others, and transformed 50,000 Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies into e-PACS, while groundbreaking occurred for Sahakar Van facilities at Barabanki and Jalgaon.
Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh accused the Congress of allowing "mafias" to rule the cooperative ecosystem, while Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma alleged Congress-ruled States created a "hotbed of corruption."
The government is establishing "Tribhuvan" Sahkari University in Anand, Gujarat to address human resource gaps, advancing the "Sahakar Se Samriddhi" vision and positioning cooperatives as key to achieving "Viksit Bharat" by 2047.
