America’s 250th: The Evolution of Excise Taxes

British taxation on the American colonies was a major catalyst for the American Revolution, but most of the tax revolts leading up to the war were in response to one tax type: excise taxes.

America 250: British repeal Stamp Act, but pass more taxes and restrictions

After all the uprisings caused by the Stamp Act, the British repealed the act in 1766. But they apparently refused to learn their lesson from those uprisings and immediately began implementing more taxes and restrictions, which became known as the Townshend Acts between 17671768.
