American Signature files for bankruptcy amid furniture sales slump

The Ohio-based retailer reported $803 million in sales for 2025, down from $1.1 billion in 2023, citing severe housing market decline and macroeconomic headwinds.

  • On Sunday, American Signature Inc. filed for Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, the Ohio-based parent of Value City Furniture and American Signature Furniture.
  • Amid a steep housing downturn, executives cited broader macroeconomic pressures including a severe housing market decline, rising inflation, elevated interest rates, and new tariffs, Rudolph Morando said.
  • Court papers reveal rising operating losses alongside planned store shutdowns as American Signature Inc. reports $803 million in sales in 2025, employs about 3,000 people, and plans 33 store closures.
  • The company will continue liquidation and store-closing sales, and stores remain open, the company told Business Insider, while pursuing a sale of remaining assets with an expected agreement pending court approval.
  • Amid failed financing, the company says it needs debtor-in-possession financing, with equity holders providing about $51 million and liabilities between just over $500 million and $1 billion to 1,000–5,000 creditors.
