American Airlines Expects to Lose Money in 2026 Due to High Fuel Costs
The carrier said fuel expense rose 67.5% to $4.6 billion, and it now expects a larger adjusted loss for 2026.
On Thursday, American Airlines projected an adjusted 2026 loss of $1.00 to $1.60 per share, reversing July guidance that allowed for profitability despite record third-quarter revenue of $16.3 billion.
Fuel expenses jumped $1.9 billion, or 67.5%, to $4.6 billion this quarter, as jet fuel costs spiked after the Iran war began, according to CNBC, with prices anticipated to reach about $4.70 a gallon.
CEO Robert Isom said American 'delivered record third-quarter revenue and the strongest year-over-year revenue growth in my career.' Yet the carrier reported an adjusted net loss of $182 million, or 28 cents a share.
American is the latest of four major U.S. airlines to trim its 2026 outlook following fuel-price surges. Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines each pared guidance earlier this month, CNBC reported.
Through reengineering efforts, American expects to reach nearly $1 billion in annual run-rate savings by year-end 2026. Given elevated fuel prices, the carrier anticipates network growth in 2027 will slow from 2026 levels.
