American Airlines Will Put Starlink Wi-Fi on Every Mainline Jet

The move expands an earlier plan and will give more than 1,000 aircraft Starlink service with speeds up to 1 gigabit per second, American said.

  • On Thursday, American Airlines announced plans to install SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service across its entire primary fleet of over 1,000 aircraft starting next year, more than doubling its initial commitment.
  • American had initially planned to equip only more than 500 Airbus jets with Starlink technology when announced in May, but will now standardize high-speed connectivity across the entire mainline fleet.
  • The upgraded fleet will utilize SpaceX's Performance Aero Terminal, capable of delivering speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second. Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said, "Our customers have told us that dependable connectivity can make a meaningful difference."
  • This switchover will significantly improve Wi-Fi on American's twin-aisle Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft, resolving connectivity gaps often encountered with legacy Panasonic service on long-haul routes.
  • Globally, SpaceX has partnered with United Airlines and Alaska Airlines, while Delta Air Lines opted for Amazon Leo technology, positioning the industry toward competing satellite internet standards.
