Wimbledon Boys Champion Lee Inspired by World Cup Star Yamal
The 16-year-old American qualifier became only the second qualifier to win the boys' title after saving key break points in the deciding set.
On Sunday, July 12, American 16-year-old Jordan Lee rallied to defeat Cruz Hewitt 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, winning the Wimbledon boys' singles title in London.
Cruz Hewitt, 17, is the son of 2002 Wimbledon men's champion Lleyton Hewitt, who watched from the stands as his son competed for the boys' title.
After losing the opening set, Lee staged a comeback in the final two sets. He sealed victory with a backhand winner up the line on his first match point.
Lee became only the second qualifier to win the Wimbledon boys' title and the first American winner since Samir Banerjee in 2021. He said, "A year ago at this time I was sitting at home on the couch, didn't know if I was going to play tennis again."
Lee's achievement mirrors Noah Rubin's 2014 Wimbledon victory as the last qualifier to win any Grand Slam boys' tournament. His win represents a remarkable return after uncertain prospects regarding his tennis career.
Cruz Hewitt, the son of Australian Lleyton Hewitt, who triumphed at Wimbledon 24 years ago, had a chance to take home the trophy among juniors this year, but unfortunately he had to admit his opponent's narrow superiority in the final.
