Amazon Web Services to park $5 billion in South Korea data centers

Amazon Web Services will build AI data centers in multiple South Korean regions, marking the largest foreign investment with over $5 billion by 2031, supporting tech and AI growth.

  • On Oct 29, Amazon Web Services pledged over $5 billion to build AI data centres in Incheon and Gyeonggi Province by 2031, Seoul said, marking South Korea's largest direct foreign investment.
  • At the APEC CEO Summit in Gyeongju, Matt Garman, head of Amazon Web Services, announced the commitment during a meeting with President Lee Jae Myung, who said South Korea aims to be a top three AI powerhouse with initiatives like an AI expressway.
  • AWS and six other global companies unveiled plans to invest a combined $9 billion in Korea over five years, with the seven companies submitting $660 million in near-term FDI reports, Seoul said.
  • The investment is expected to accelerate growth as Renault Korea named Korea one of its five global strategic hubs and Umicore will supply batteries for 500,000 EVs annually.
  • Given Korea's chipmakers, OpenAI planned joint ventures with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to build two data centres, a Korean-style Stargate, with an initial capacity of 20 megawatts.
