Amazon to invest additional $21 billion in Spain for data centres and AI
Amazon's €33.7 billion investment in Spain aims to create 30,000 jobs by 2035 and establish Aragon as a key AI data center hub amid EU tech sovereignty debates.
- On March 2, 2026, Amazon said it will invest an additional 18 billion euros in Spain to expand data centres and boost AI innovation.
- Building on an earlier Aragon plan, last year Amazon pledged 15.7 billion euros after a meeting with Pedro Sánchez and David Zapolsky, according to sources.
- Amazon said the funding will support total commitments of 33.7 billion euros and almost 30,000 jobs until 2035, expanding data infrastructure and AI capabilities across Europe.
- The company said `With this investment, we make Spain the AI epicentre of our operations in Europe,` while Aragón regional leaders hope its renewable energy can support generative artificial intelligence data centres.
- In the wider industry context, analysts note the investment is small compared with the hundreds of billions planned by Amazon, Microsoft, Google and OpenAI amid the tech sovereignty debate.
