Amazon Is Pulling Support for Kindles From 2012 or Earlier. What to Do Now

Amazon will offer a 20% discount and a $20 ebook credit as older Kindle devices lose Kindle Store access.

  • Starting May 20, 2026, Amazon will block Kindle Store access on e-readers and Kindle Fire tablets released in 2012 and earlier, Amazon spokesperson Jackie Burke confirmed to The Verge.
  • The policy spans models from the 2007 Kindle 1st Generation through 2012 releases; Amazon notes these devices have been "supported for at least 14 years" but no longer meet current technology standards.
  • While store access ends, users can still read existing ebooks or manually load new content. Factory resetting or deregistering these devices will permanently lock them, preventing re-registration.
  • To encourage upgrades, Amazon offers a 20 percent discount on new Kindle hardware and a $20 ebook credit for affected customers, valid until June 20, 2026.
  • Affected users retain full access to their Kindle Libraries and purchases through the Kindle app and Kindle for Web, which remain fully functional and unaffected by the store access changes.
