Amateur Stars Russell and Koivun Play Together in the US Open’s ‘Future of Golf’ Pairing
The pair shot 4-over 74 each as windy Shinnecock Hills tested five amateurs who made the cut.
On Saturday, Miles Russell and 21-year-old Jackson Koivun played together at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, a pairing TV coverage dubbed the future of golf.
Both players were among the amateurs to make the cut, with Koivun preparing to turn pro after a dominant college career at Auburn and Russell yet to start college.
Challenging winds across Shinnecock Hills saw both golfers shoot matching 4-over 74s on Saturday, leaving them at 7 over for the tournament during their first major championship weekend.
"Amateur golf is in a great spot right now," Koivun said, noting the impressive performance of the five collegians who advanced to the weekend rounds of the major.
Russell, who will join teammate Charlie Woods at Florida State, emphasized maintaining perspective: "One day you have it and the next day it's gone," he added.
