Amanda Seyfried Learned to Play ‘Blue’ for Shelved Joni Mitchell Film
Seyfried learned Mitchell songs on dulcimer, piano and guitar during the pandemic, but the planned film never moved forward.
Oscar-Nominated actor Amanda Seyfried revealed she was cast as Joni Mitchell in a biopic that is no longer happening. The film, focused on the singer and her manager Elliot Roberts, was shelved after Roberts died.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Seyfried learned to play the entirety of Mitchell's seminal album Blue on dulcimer, piano, and guitar. She met the singer at her home, where they listened to the record together.
Her preparation led to a viral performance of California on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in March 2025. "I felt like a bona fide musician," Seyfried said, describing the accomplishment as transformative.
Director Cameron Crowe is now working on a separate Mitchell biopic, reportedly starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Meryl Streep. Fans have pushed Crowe to cast Seyfried as the 16-year-old version of the singer.
Official casting for Crowe's film remains unconfirmed despite reports regarding Taylor-Joy and Streep. Seyfried has clarified that her viral performance was not a campaign to secure a role in the new production.
