'We Move on Together' - Alonso Happy to Have Clarity After Chelsea Ownership Change
Xabi Alonso said the club needs clear leadership as Behdad Eghbali takes almost full control and Chelsea seeks a return to major trophies.
On Thursday, Chelsea announced that private equity firm Clearlake Capital assumed full control of the club after Todd Boehly and Mark Walter sold their minority stakes. Boehly stepped down as chairman, ending his hands-on role since the 2022 acquisition.
Clearlake previously held 61.5% of the club, while Boehly and Walter each owned 12.83%. Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss will remain an important stakeholder in the ownership group, which acquired Chelsea for $3.3 billion in 2022.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso welcomed the clarity regarding ownership, noting he maintains a strong working relationship with Behdad Eghbali. Eghbali, who leads Clearlake, was instrumental in recruiting the Spaniard to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Following a challenging campaign where Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League, the club stated its ambition is to compete at the highest level and win major trophies. Alonso was hired to revitalize the squad.
Alonso confirmed he is assessing fitness for several players ahead of Friday night's away match against Brentford. While Joao Pedro is ruled out for Brazil, the manager conceded it remains a possibility the forward features for Chelsea.
