Almost 10,000 flights canceled as major winter storm bears down across much of the US
Nearly 10,000 flights canceled and over 95,000 power outages reported as a storm brings heavy snow, ice, and freezing rain across much of the U.S., officials said.

- Roughly 140 million people were under a winter storm warning as the federal government put nearly 30 search-and-rescue teams on standby and FEMA staged more than seven million meals, 600,000 blankets and 300 generators.
- Utility companies braced as about 68,000 power outages were reported at 8 a.m. ET, roughly 27,600 in Texas, while governors in more than a dozen states urged residents to stay home.
- Five years ago, a severe cold snap took down much of the Texas power grid, leaving millions without power and causing hundreds of deaths, while in at least 11 Southern states most homes rely on electric heating.
