Alleged netball anti-Semitism leads to charge, ban
The woman was issued a move-on order and later charged, while Netball NSW banned her from all activities during the investigation.
On Sunday, New South Wales Police charged a 42-year-old woman with using offensive language following reports she made antisemitic comments during a junior netball match between Maccabi Netball Club and Saints Netball Club at Heffron Park on Saturday.
Officers initially issued the woman a move-on direction at Heffron Park on Saturday before formally charging her on Sunday; the charge carries a maximum penalty of a $660 fine or a community corrections order.
Randwick Netball Association president Jenny Morrissey stated the organization "will not tolerate antisemitic or discriminatory behaviour," while Netball NSW provisionally suspended the woman and Saints Netball Club unequivocally condemned the alleged abuse.
The woman is due to appear at Waverley Local Court on Wednesday June 17, and remains banned from all netball activities pending investigation by Netball NSW.
This incident occurred as the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion held hearings; witnesses reported an "unprecedented" rise in incidents in community sport affecting Jewish Australians.
