EB Games to Shut All Local Stores as New Zealand Arm Closes This Month

EB Games New Zealand will close 38 stores and its distribution centre due to sustained poor retail conditions and a multi-million dollar loss, with some staff offered roles in Australia.

  • On January 31, EB Games New Zealand will close all stores, and the New Zealand Distribution Centre will cease operating on February 28.
  • Following internal letters to staff, EB Games Australia & New Zealand managing director Shane Stockwell said the New Zealand business was no longer commercially viable after a "multi-million dollar loss during the 2024 fiscal year" and employees were notified last week and Wednesday about proposed closures.
  • There are currently 38 stores in New Zealand and 336 in Australia, and EB Games has operated in New Zealand for 25 years while facing recent store stress.
  • It is unclear how many roles will be lost, and the company said there may be relocation opportunities for New Zealand employees to Australian EB Games operations and plans to open ebgames.co.au to New Zealand customers by the end of March, 2026.
  • Stores and the website will run a Closing Down Sale starting Thursday at 1pm, and the Botany Town Centre EB Games store is one of more than 30 closing this month.
