Alison Chawke Walks Free From Jail Just 28 Days Into 12-Month Sentence
The 41-year-old was freed after 28 days under an early-release programme that requires supervised release and unpaid community work, reports said.
On Tuesday, August 11, Alison Chawke walked free from Limerick Prison after serving 28 days for assaulting two men at the Dunraven Arms Hotel in Adare on November 9, 2023.
Chawke, daughter of publican Charlie Chawke, pleaded guilty to an unprovoked assault and was sentenced to two years and two months, with the final 14 months suspended.
Officials released Chawke under the Community Return Scheme, an incentivized early-release program co-managed by the Irish Prison Service and Probation Service to support prisoner reintegration.
The Limerick Women's prison currently operates at 159 per cent capacity, with 89 inmates occupying 56 beds, according to Irish Prison Service data published Wednesday.
Sinn Féin justice spokesman Matt Carthy said the release "does raise serious questions," while Social Democrats justice spokesman Gary Gannon called it "appropriate," citing ineffective short-term sentences.
