- On Monday, a Malian court sentenced broadcaster Mohamed Youssouf 'Ras Bath' Bathily and influencer Rokia Doumbia to seven years in prison, plus a three-year suspended term, for criminal conspiracy and discrediting the state.

- Prosecutors argued that "Ras Bath is a danger" to the junta and "must be kept a long way from social media and the radio," revealing the government's strategy to neutralize influential voices.
- Defense counsel Mohamed Aly Bathily, the broadcaster's father, stated they have not yet decided whether to appeal the verdict, leaving their legal future and potential for release in limbo.
- Mali currently ranks 121st out of 180 nations in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index according to Reporters Without Borders, reflecting a broader decline in civil liberties and intensified crackdowns on dissent.
