Are we listening for alien intelligence the wrong way?
Some astronomers believe we should search for alien intelligence at higher radio frequencies than those traditionally used in SETI. And they've already begun. The post Are we listening for alien intelligence the wrong way? first appeared on EarthSky.
A new study proposes to rethink the way we seek extraterrestrial intelligence: perhaps the problem is not the silence of the universe, but our way of listening.
What if we had left a part of the 'dial' unwatched? What if the long-awaited message from the stars was right there, but in an area of the radio wave spectrum that we haven't explored for a long time? Many suggest that we find nothing because we assume (wrongly) that an alien civilization will use, like us, radio waves to communicate, when it might actually be using a totally different technology.
It could be that scientists have not been searching for signs of alien life in the right frequency band so far.
