Alexander Zverev reaches the US Open final and awaits Shelton-Tiafoe winner
On Friday, Alexander Zverev defeated Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6 , 7-6 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, reaching his second career U.S. Open final.
Despite dropping the opener, unseeded Khachanov forced Zverev into two tiebreaks, with the Russian erasing two set points in the second before Zverev prevailed by winning a 34-shot rally.
The German is 24-2 in Grand Slam matches this season and has won 13 consecutive sets, seeking to avenge his 2020 U.S. Open final loss.
On Sunday, Zverev faces either Frances Tiafoe or Ben Shelton in the final, as both Americans compete Friday for the chance to become the first U.S. man to win since Andy Roddick in 2003.
Anticipating a partisan crowd, Zverev told ESPN he hopes to avoid the 'American dream' scenario on Sunday after winning his first major at Roland Garros and reaching the Wimbledon final.
