Amazon Launches AI-Powered Alexa+ In Australia – Channelnews

Amazon says the chatbot was trained on local culture and will start with tens of thousands of Australian users.

  • On Thursday, Amazon began the Australian rollout of Alexa+, an AI-powered personal assistant using large language model technology similar to ChatGPT and Claude to enable natural, conversational interaction.
  • Blake Nussy, a Brisbane-born senior technical product manager at Amazon Alexa, said engineers spent years training the system to avoid American reasoning patterns and deliver an authentic Australian experience.
  • In a live demo in Sydney on Wednesday, Alexa+ drafted emails, remembered personal details, and correctly identified Harry Styles' song "Watermelon Sugar" from a vague reference about strawberries.
  • Amazon plans to invite thousands of Australians to try Alexa+ over the coming weeks through Early Access, after which it will be included with Amazon Prime membership or cost AU$29.99 monthly for Non-Prime subscribers.
  • The rollout marks a shift from rigid commands toward conversational AI, building on 77 million general knowledge questions Australians asked the current Alexa system in 2025.
