Aldi and Lidl Brought Under Same Competition Rules as Major UK Supermarkets
The watchdog said the change will help ensure customers get better choice and prices as Aldi and Lidl keep expanding their UK store networks.
- On Thursday, the Competition and Markets Authority announced that Aldi and Lidl are now classified as "large grocery retailers," subjecting them to the same land agreement rules as competitors like Tesco and Sainsbury.
- Designed to prevent large chains from using restrictive land contracts to block rivals, the Controlled Land Order has applied to competitors like Asda, Morrisons, and Waitrose since 2010.
- Juliette Enser, executive director for Competition Enforcement and Markets, stated the designation aims to "level the playing field," while recent Worldpanel by Numerator data confirms Aldi holds 10.5% market share and Lidl 8.6%.
- Both discounters welcomed the ruling, emphasizing it will not hinder their expansion programs; an Aldi spokeswoman confirmed the company will invest £900 million next year in 40 new stores.
- The CMA stated the update will help "to ensure customers get the best choice of where to shop," as Aldi and Lidl maintain their focus on opening new stores across the UK.
