Alberta separatists say they’ll keep fighting after independence vote
Wilson said separatists have already won by forcing a wider debate and convincing hundreds of thousands of Albertans that independence is possible.
Albertans head to the polls on Monday to decide whether to remain a province or begin the legal process toward a future referendum on separation from Canada.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith placed the separation question on the ballot alongside nine other items, arguing it addresses frustration with Ottawa despite her personal opposition to independence.
Despite polls showing just 22% support for separation, separatist leaders Keith Wilson and Jeffrey Rath insist their movement will continue regardless of Monday's outcome, declaring "this is just the first battle."
Efforts to replace Smith will begin after Tuesday's vote, with activists rallying Saturday in Edmonton claiming she betrayed party members who supported her.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has warned that initiating separation could trigger economic uncertainty, particularly as President Donald Trump's trade threats raise concerns about Canadian sovereignty.
