Alberta bill would stop provincial entities from considering diversity, equity and inclusion in hiring
The bill would also bar mandatory DEI training and let the government grant limited exemptions through regulations.
On Tuesday, Justice Minister Mickey Amery tabled legislation preventing provincial entities from considering "personal characteristics" in hiring decisions. The bill targets the provincial public service, Crown corporations, schools, and municipalities.
Premier Danielle Smith stated that hiring decisions should prioritize who is "best qualified for the job," prompting amendments to the Alberta Human Rights Act that restrict consideration of protected traits like race, religion, or disability.
Legislation also expands the Victims of Non-consensual Distribution of Intimate Images Act to include sextortion and AI-generated content, enabling victims to sue anyone sharing or threatening to share private media without consent.
Creating a new provincial offence, the bill mandates fines of up to $10,000 or two years of jail time, while amendments establish new standards requiring lawyers to have five years of active membership before receiving King's Counsel designation.
Updates to the Education Act allow principals to discipline students for threatening to share intimate images, while the bill's hiring restrictions apply to government-funded non-profits under Alberta Human Rights Commission oversight after complaints.
