'Alarmingly high' levels of salt in popular sandwiches, with one nearing five McDonald's burgers
Researchers said 44% of sandwiches surveyed would carry a red salt warning, and one Gail’s sandwich contained 6.88g of salt.
Action on Salt & Sugar analyzed 546 sandwiches and identified alarming salt levels in many high-street products, with Gail's Smoked Chicken Caesar Club containing 6.88g of salt—exceeding the 6g daily adult limit.
After more than 20 years of ineffective voluntary targets, Sonia Pombo, head of research and impact at Action on Salt & Sugar, labeled the Government's approach a "failure" and urged mandatory measures to protect public health.
Researchers found that 97% of surveyed products failed to provide one-third of recommended daily fibre, while 44% would carry a red warning for high salt and a quarter are classified as "less healthy" under the 2004/5 Nutrient Profiling Model.
Many products, including Tesco's Fully Loaded Hot Honey Halloumi at 3.78g and Pret's Ham & Greve Baguette at 3.85g, contain salt levels exceeding those found in almost five McDonald's cheeseburgers, exposing hidden sodium in everyday lunch choices.
Retailers including Asda and Lidl achieved full compliance with salt targets, demonstrating that lower-salt reformulations like Subway's Veggie Delite Sub at 0.60g are achievable despite broader health risks from excess salt, including stroke and heart disease.
