Alan Cumming Shares Emotional Toll of Leo's Violent Death in Channel 4's Tip Toe
The finale shows how homophobia and group pressure turn a neighbour dispute into Leo Struthers’ killing, and Clive receives a mandatory life sentence.
The Russell T Davies drama Tip Toe concluded Thursday night, finally revealing the circumstances behind Leo Struthers' death after the gay bar owner, played by Alan Cumming, appeared hanging from a lamppost in the opening episode.
Tensions between Leo Struthers and his neighbour Clive Goss, played by David Morrissey, escalated throughout the five-part series as the friendly acquaintances transformed into deadly enemies amid rising societal intolerance.
Clive Goss exploded into a seething rage after a photo of his son George in makeup appeared on screen, prompting him and his group to commit a senseless act of violence against Leo Struthers.
Title cards revealed Clive Goss received a mandatory life sentence for the murder, while misinformation labeled the victim a "convicted paedophile" within 18 months, distorting Leo Struthers' legacy.
Although the series presents a chillingly realistic narrative, creator Russell T Davies confirmed Tip Toe is not based on a true story, but rather inspired by "various incidents" in his own life.
