Airbus delays some A220 output, narrowing window to reach 2026 target
Airbus faces supply chain issues and production errors, delaying some A220 jets and tightening the timeline to reach 14 jets per month by late 2026, sources said.
- On Monday, Airbus pushed back assembly of some A220 jets this year and next, and may only hit its 14 jets a month target in the final weeks of 2026, industry sources said.
- Supply shortages and line errors have disrupted production at A220 plants near Montreal, Canada and Mobile, Alabama, while Quebec Economy Minister Christine Frechette linked losses to trade tensions after the Quebec government wrote down C$400 million of its 25% stake.
- Airbus removed a handful of jets from 2025 schedules and almost 10 next year, delivered 62 A220s in the first nine months, and is fine-tuning plans over the next 14 months.
- To protect deliveries in the short term, Airbus moved personnel and assumed wing production responsibilities, shifting some Quebec workers to fix final handover problems as part of a joint rescue plan with Spirit AeroSystems.
- Despite active sales, the A220 program remains loss-making and Airbus, owner of the remaining 75% stake after acquiring it from Bombardier in 2018, sees production expansion as key to cutting costs.
