Air quality in Sarawak's Serian returns below hazardous level; emergency may be declared in areas with API over 400
Malaysia is ready to declare emergencies for any area with an Air Pollution Index above 400 as Serian’s reading topped 500, officials said.
- On Friday, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim declared a state of emergency in Serian Division, Sarawak, following hazardous haze conditions affecting public health and safety.
- The Prime Minister's Office announced the decision followed advice from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, with relevant agencies consulted on air quality levels.
- Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup stated the government is prepared to declare emergencies where the Air Pollution Index exceeds 400; Serian recorded more than 500.
- Cloud seeding operations in Sarawak, Kedah, and Perlis yesterday produced rain, Arthur reported today at Dataran Kampung Basong, as Malaysia received written permission from the Indonesian Government to cross borders.
- The emergency remains effective until API readings drop, with mandated school closures and face mask requirements; officials monitor 68 nationwide API stations, with Kuching, Samarahan, and Sri Aman recording very unhealthy readings.
