Air Force father surprises high school graduate after flying home from Japan
The Air Force master sergeant kept the trip secret, then greeted his son after the ceremony and later gave him a new car.
On Friday, Branden Jackson's graduation from Huffman High School in Birmingham, Alabama became unforgettable when his father, Air Force Master Sgt. Tobias Jackson, appeared as a surprise guest after he crossed the stage.
Master Sgt. Jackson, an 18-year Air Force veteran stationed in Japan for three years, had secretly arranged leave without his son's knowledge, keeping the plan hidden despite their almost-daily calls across a 14-hour time difference.
Branden had been told his father would watch via social media livestream, making the in-person appearance a complete shock; Jackson flew 36 hours and said 'I don't even know how to explain it' upon seeing his son.
Following the ceremony, Jackson presented his son with a new car as a graduation gift, arriving one day after Branden received his driver's license; the son now plans to pursue a career in the Air Force focusing on cybersecurity.
The reunion carries a bittersweet deadline: Master Sgt. Jackson must return to Japan on Tuesday, cutting short the rare in-person time the father and son share across their military separation and 14-hour time difference.
