2027 Elections: Algorithms Won’t Decide The Vote, Says Amupitan

Amupitan said INEC will keep human oversight over result collation and voter accreditation as it expands online registration and AI tools.

  • On Wednesday, Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan declared at the Artificial Intelligence and Democracy Forum 2026 in Abuja that algorithms must never determine Nigeria's 2027 election outcome.
  • The two-day forum brought together electoral officials from Senegal, Kenya, Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Togo to discuss balancing technological efficiency with democratic control. Amupitan emphasized that voters hold exclusive authority over leadership choices.
  • INEC uses AI to identify duplicate records within over 13 million entries in the national voters' register and has processed more than 15,000 candidate nominations from 22 political parties through its digitized portal.
  • Yiaga Africa Executive Director Samson Itodo warned that public distrust remains high and urged transparency for independent AI platforms aggregating results, stressing only INEC holds legal authority to declare official winners.
  • INEC established an AI unit within its Information and Communication Technology department and is finalizing a governance framework prioritizing integrity, transparency and human intervention before the January 16, 2027, presidential elections.
