France's wheat production drops after scorching weather pushes early harvest
The wheat harvest in France, Europe’s largest grain producer, is expected to fall by four percent compared to 2025 after an unusually early harvest carried out during successive heatwaves.
In mid-July 2026, the harvests are about to end in our Hauts-de-France region. Wheat, well advanced this year, is of good quality, but yields are less important, especially because of the heat wave that made it mature too quickly.
Extreme heat provides for emergency maturity. The DRV significantly lowers its yield forecast for cereals. Winter wheat has suffered above all.
French wheat production is expected to decline by 4% in 2026 due to difficult climatic conditions and the multiplication of canicular episodes French wheat production is expected
The heat of 2026 aggravates the cereal crisis in France. After difficult years, crops are forecast to be catastrophic, threatening farmers' incomes: wheat (-4%), barley (-6%) and maize (-30%). Farmers, already weakened, face an unprecedented situation.
The canicular episodes that France has experienced since the end of May 2026 have had a strong impact on agriculture. Losses of crops, yields in decline or even watering, the high heats cause the French productions to suffer.
