Canadiens Sign Demidov to Eight-Year Extension; Jets Add Skinner in Free Agency
The 20-year-old Russian forward signed before a collective bargaining agreement deadline that reduces maximum contract length to seven years.
On Wednesday, Canada Day, the Montreal Canadiens signed forward Ivan Demidov to an eight-year, $73 million contract extension, keeping the Russian winger through the 2034-35 season.
The Canadiens secured this eight-year agreement before September 15, when the NHL's new collective bargaining agreement reduces maximum contract length to seven years for re-signing players.
Demidov, a first-round pick in the 2024 NHL draft, led all rookies with 62 points last season and has recorded 64 points in 84 career games.
The Russian forward joins Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky, and Lane Hutson as key members of Montreal's young core, all signed through at least 2030.
Agent Dan Milstein confirmed the deal carries a $9.125 million average annual value, including $57.6 million in signing bonuses and a 10-team no-trade clause for the final three seasons.
This may not be the sparkle that the supporters of the Canadian dreamed of, but it is still one. The organization announced on Wednesday that it had granted Ivan Demidov an eight-year contract extension.
