- On Friday, Srinagar Member Parliament Aga Ruhullah Mehdi announced he will resign from the Lok Sabha and the National Conference on November 3, the 26th death anniversary of his father, Aga Syed Mehdi.
- Ruhullah cited ideological differences, accusing the National Conference of abandoning election promises to fight for the restoration of Article 370 and Jammu-Kashmir's special status after winning elections.
- The decision follows a challenge from Farooq Abdullah, who told reporters on Tuesday, "If you think people voted for you, resign and go back to them." We will see how many votes you get."
- Addressing what he called a "rather disrespectful attack," Ruhullah stated, "Rest assured, the resignation will come. It would have come even without you asking but before that must come accountability."
- Ruhullah plans to explain his decision at a public rally in Budgam on November 3 and may contest the subsequent Srinagar by-election as an independent candidate.
