DOT Says It's Entitled to CDL Information as 22 States Sue
The coalition says the federal demand would expose names, birth dates and Social Security numbers for 17 million drivers without legal justification.
- On Thursday, Attorney General Kathy Jennings joined a coalition of 21 attorneys general and Pennsylvania in filing two lawsuits against the Trump administration to block demands for sensitive data on 17 million commercial drivers.
- The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration demanded five years of driver records from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, threatening to terminate more than $10 million in federal funding if not provided by August 17.
- Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias challenged the "Immigration Enforcement Subpoena" as lacking legal justification, describing the demand as an "unprecedented amount of state-owned, sensitive personal information."
- Complying with the mandate would "create a brand-new database controlled by the federal government" that states cannot access or control, potentially deterring drivers from applying for CDLs and depriving states of licensing revenue.
- These suits follow repeated legal battles between states and the Trump administration over personal data use, which Jennings described as "privacy in service of an unrelated immigration agenda.
