After unionized Canada Post workers reject ‘final offers,’ what happens next?
CANADA, AUG 5 – Unionized postal workers rejected a 13% wage increase offer and restructuring plans, with nearly 70% voting against, prolonging negotiations amid Canada Post’s financial losses.
- In Ottawa, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers rejected Canada Post's `final offers`, extending the impasse with no strike notice issued.
- Earlier this year, William Kaplan found Canada Post was effectively bankrupt, prompting the Crown corporation to request a forced vote on its late-May `final offers` from Minister Patty Hajdu.
- The Canada Industrial Relations Board concluded the vote on August 1 with 68.5 per cent of urban mail carriers and 69.4 per cent of rural and suburban mail carriers opposing the deal, out of roughly 55,000 votes.
- On Friday, Canada Post said it was `disappointed` by the vote and is evaluating its next steps while the overtime work ban continues.
- With over 30 percent of union members backing the proposals, Hajdu said Friday the parties should return to the table `as soon as possible`, as a second strike seems less likely.
