Charlotte Native and Panthers Quarterback Will Grier Retires From NFL
The former third-round pick spent seven seasons as a backup across six NFL teams and leaves Carolina with three quarterbacks on its roster.
On Wednesday, Carolina Panthers quarterback Will Grier announced his retirement after 7 NFL seasons. The team placed the 31-year-old on the reserve/retired list.
Originally a 2019 third-round pick by the Panthers, Grier played for 7 organizations including multiple stints with the Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, and Philadelphia Eagles.
Before turning professional, Grier starred at West Virginia after transferring from Florida, finishing fourth in Heisman Trophy voting in 2018. He made his only 2 career starts as a rookie in 2019.
Grier's retirement leaves the Carolina Panthers with three quarterbacks heading into training camp next week: Bryce Young, Kenny Pickett, and undrafted rookie Haynes King.
Before signing with Carolina in April, Grier considered joining the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff under Brian Schottenheimer. He chose to return to his hometown team for one final playing opportunity.
