After heavy rains mud avalanches blocked the Kaunertal glacier road. Around 200 trapped people were brought to safety by helicopter.
First came the hail, then the scree avalanches: in the Austrian Alps several mures have spilled the road to the rear Kaunertal. With helicopters the trapped people were evacuated, among them many German excursion guests.
Severe thunderstorms with rain and hail have caused mudslides in the popular Austrian ski resort of Kaunertal, near the Italian border. As a result, the army has to evacuate approximately 200 tourists who became trapped.
After heavy rain in Austria, around 200 people are imprisoned in a valley. The Austrian army has started evacuation flights to bring the excursion tourists out of the Kaunertal valley, as the Ministry of Defence in Vienna announced.
After thunderstorms, the Kaunertal Glacier Road was blocked by several mures at about 50 metres – it is blocked for the time being. Muren threatens several settlements in South Tyrol.
