After Estrangement, Son Misses Out on Hefty Inheritance
The widow says her son will be surprised by the estate size and is revising her will to reflect years of estrangement, advice columnist R. Eric Thomas said.
Following her husband's death two years ago, a widow identified as No Longer Mom is revising her will to disinherit her estranged son, whom she says has disowned the family.
The son, now in his late 40s, remained indifferent to his father's decline and treats his mother with contempt, having adopted other families as his own and ceased contact with his parents.
Starting at age 13, the son engaged in smoking and selling pot while skipping school. He later called his father's life's work 'crap' and diminished his parents in every way.
Columnist R. Eric Thomas advised No Longer Mom that writing a letter may clarify her intentions, though she should consult an estate lawyer to ensure it does not contradict her new will.
Though the son will be surprised by the estate's size, the letter provides No Longer Mom a sense of closure after decades of family estrangement and painful rejection.
