African Champions League holders knocked out in second round
On Friday, defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns were eliminated from the CAF Champions League after a 1-1 draw against Angola's Wiliete in Pretoria, exiting on the away goals rule.
Tashreeq Matthews gave the hosts an 11th-minute lead following a goalless first leg in Lubango last Sunday, but Wiliete striker Mabululu equalized in the 49th minute.
This defeat marks the first time since 2015 that Sundowns have failed to reach the group stages, ending an 11-year streak; rivals Orlando Pirates secured their place after an emphatic 5-0 aggregate victory over African Stars.
Sundowns now face no path into the Confederation Cup after the Confederation of African Football scrapped the play-off route, forcing the club to refocus on domestic competitions including the Betway Premiership.
Group phase participants will be finalized this Sunday when the remaining preliminary round matches conclude, with Wiliete advancing to join the 16 clubs competing for the title.
In a big surprise, Mamilody Sun Downs left the title of the Champions League of Africa from the second preparatory role in front of the Angolan Willetti, to fail to reach groups for the first time in 12 years.
