Tony Stewart Collected in Another Early Crash During NASCAR Truck Race at Talladega Superspeedway
A flat tire triggered the Lap 17 pileup that sent two high-profile drivers out and forced a red flag, officials said.
On Friday, a multi-truck crash at Talladega Superspeedway ended Stage 1 early on Lap 17, knocking out NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart and YouTube influencer Garrett Mitchell, known as Cleetus McFarland.
NASCAR's stage rule dictated the outcome; a caution within 10 laps of the scheduled Lap 20 conclusion made Stage 1 official immediately, shifting unused laps to Stage 2.
Stewart Friesen's spin in traffic near Turn 2 triggered a nine-truck pileup, sending Stewart and Mitchell into the wall and prompting a red flag on Lap 18 for cleanup.
Both Stewart and Mitchell were eliminated from the race, while Corey LaJoie, Kris Wright, and Friesen were checked and released from the infield care center, according to Reporter Bob Pockrass.
Stewart, inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame six years ago, will return to his full-time role as a Top Fuel driver in the NHRA drag racing series with two races remaining.
