Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia -- The UN today awarded three new World Restoration Flagships in Brazil, the Sahel region, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The initiatives are strengthening landscape productivity by restoring degraded ecosystems in regions facing drought, desertification, and climate change.

Saudi Arabia has received a United Nations Award for World Restoration Flagships, in recognition of the Kingdom's sustained efforts to expand vegetation cover, restore degraded land, protect ecosystems and promote biodiversity.
Land models sprout as degradation threatens billions of livelihoods
Promising efforts to restore degraded land are now in the spotlight at a time when 40 per cent of the world’s land currently faces degradation and drought, threatening the livelihoods of over three billion people, the head of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) said Wednesday, announcing three winners of its World Restoration Flagships awards.
The award recognizes a proposal to restore 2 million hectares of the Brazilian Cerrado by 2030, in addition to projects in Saudi Arabia and the Sahel; benefits include increased productivity, landscape and wildlife restoration, improved air quality, and job creation.
