Congo Ebola outbreak kills more than 5,000
Delayed detection and conflict have helped the outbreak spread faster, while eight provinces are affected and no approved treatments exist.
Government data showed the Ebola death toll in the Democratic Republic of Congo surpassed 5,000 on Friday, with more than 10,000 people infected since the outbreak was declared in May.
Delayed detection, conflict, and strained health services have helped the virus spread more rapidly than in previous outbreaks, hindering authorities' ability to control the country's deadliest Ebola epidemic.
This crisis is the world's second-largest Ebola epidemic, trailing only the 2014-2016 outbreak that killed more than 11,000 across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone; no approved treatments exist for the rare Bundibugyo species.
Eight of Congo's 26 provinces have been affected, with the virus reaching Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda last week; many deaths occurring outside treatment centers complicate tracking efforts.
Health workers and humanitarian responders are receiving vaccinations due to their exposure risk as they continue frontline response efforts against the escalating crisis.
In one of the most severe Ebola outbreaks so far, more than 5,000 people have died in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nigeria, Kenya and Uganda are also affected.
According to government figures, more than 5,000 people have died from the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The death toll stood at 4,887 on Tuesday. The number of registered Ebola cases stands at 10,060.
