Top health official says the Ebola outbreak could reach the UK
Jean Kaseya said 10,000 cases and nearly 5,000 deaths show countries must strengthen surveillance and preparedness against imported infections.
On Thursday, Director-General, Africa CDC Jean Kaseya warned that the Ebola outbreak could spread globally like Covid-19, stating, "We want all countries to know that they are not safe if they don't take appropriate measures."
Cases of the rare Bundibugyo strain have surpassed 10,172 confirmed cases and 4,932 deaths across five countries: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, France, Kenya, and Nigeria since May 2026.
During a Wednesday meeting with more than 40 African health ministers, officials agreed to strengthen surveillance and cross-border coordination; Kaseya admitted, "we are not winning so far."
Scientists at Oxford University are urgently developing a vaccine for the strain, which carries a fatality rate of between 21 and 50 per cent, as no current cure exists.
Kaseya plans to call for a "corridor of peace" in conflict areas at a November meeting with African heads of state, as regional instability has hindered containment and prompted international funding appeals.
‘We agreed to prepare every country, coordinate across our borders and keep those borders open while watching them closely,’ says Africa Centers for Disease Control chief
