Israel: Slings in Universities Against Government Banning Nakba Commemoration · Global Voices
The Nakba ("disaster" in Arabic), which refers to the destruction of half of the Palestinian villages and the exodus of nearly 800,000 of them at the time of the establishment of the State of Israel on 14 May 1948, is in the sight of the Israeli authorities this year. The Minister of Education threatens to financially sanction academic institutions that would allow commemorations this week. A threat that has been rejected by most universities.
Actions for Palestinians in Limburg: Circle of Silence to commemorate Nakba in Hasselt and demonstration in Genk
In Hasselt and Genk there were actions for Palestine today. In Hasselt, Pax Christi organized a circle of silence this afternoon to commemorate the Nakba. In Genk there was a demonstration in the afternoon. The rector of UHasselt followed the call of the rector of UGent to make it easier to stop collaborations with Israeli partners.
