ACLU Releases Video of ICE Agent Slashing Tires of a Legal Observer in Oregon
The complaint asks the Department of Homeland Security to investigate and discipline agents after video showed a knife attack on a legal observer’s car.
The American Civil Liberties Union released video evidence on Friday showing an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent slashing a legal observer's tire in Portland, Oregon, on Oct. 7 amid a reported surge in state enforcement activities.
Documenting ICE misconduct has become increasingly necessary during the second Trump administration's immigration crackdown, according to Scarlet Kim, a senior staff attorney with the ACLU, who noted legal observers are 'neutral parties' providing assistance to those exercising their First Amendment rights.
Agents wearing masks and 'Police ICE' vests exited a nondescript vehicle that forced the observers to stop. The driver produced a knife, stabbing the car's tire once, then returned to stab the same tire two more times before departing.
Two individuals filed an administrative complaint with the Department of Homeland Security, demanding the agency 'investigate the incident, preserve all relevant evidence, and discipline the responsible agents' and conduct a comprehensive review of ICE retaliation patterns.
Portland-Area residents stated, 'What happened to us is not unique, and that is what is so terrifying,' highlighting a pattern. Recent ICE misconduct allegations include an officer charged in Houston and a former agent sentenced in Ohio.
