A court in Ecuador confirmed on Wednesday the three-year prison sentence imposed on the jailed mayor of Guayaquil, Achilles Alvarez, one of the president’s main opponents, Daniel Noboa, for the removal of an electronic bracelet that had been placed on him last year, in the framework of another judicial process. A court of the Provincial Court of Guayas ratified on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 the sentence of three years in prison against Achilles Alvarez, mayor of Guayaquil, for the crime of non-compliance with legitimate decisions of competent authority, in the so-called Grillete case. The first sentence was issued on August 3rd.

The prosecution reported that the Chamber accepted his request, and the defence questioned the evidence.
