GOP Rep Thomas Massie introduces 8 articles of impeachment against War Secretary Pete Hegseth
On Tuesday, Representative Thomas Massie read articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on the House floor, marking a rare attempt by a Republican lawmaker to pursue impeachment against a Cabinet member.
Massie's eight-article resolution accuses Hegseth of violating the War Powers Resolution by engaging in hostilities in Iran for more than 90 days without congressional authorization. The Kentucky Republican also cited unauthorized operations in Yemen and Venezuela.
Because Massie filed the resolution as privileged, the House must address it within two legislative days, though leaders may attempt to table the measure. Democratic Representative Yassamin Ansari previously introduced similar articles in April, which never reached a floor vote.
The administration has argued that initial fighting concluded, though the resolution is unlikely to advance in the GOP-controlled House amid ongoing efforts to constrain military campaigns in Iran.
Massie, a fiscal conservative who lost his primary to a Trump-backed challenger, is serving out his term. Both the House and Senate previously approved resolutions calling on President Donald Trump to end U.S. involvement.
