Acas Survey Finds 1 in 3 Employers Expect Redundancies by Early 2027
The survey of 1,000 businesses also found larger employers are more likely to cut staff as firms face pressure to control costs.
A survey of 1,000 businesses by Acas reveals that one in three employers expect to implement staff redundancies by early next year, with larger companies more inclined to reduce their workforces than smaller firms.
Kevin Rowan, Acas's director of dispute resolution, urged organisations to exhaust all alternatives before considering job cuts, warning that failing to consult staff early could lead to a "costly legal process."
The BBC recently announced it is targeting cost cuts of around 15 per cent, with as many as 2,000 jobs believed to be at risk in the broadcaster's largest downsizing in 15 years.
Employees under notice of redundancy have rights, including reasonable time off to seek new work, and can try an alternative role for 4 weeks without forfeiting their right to redundancy pay.
Staff at Glasgow Caledonian University recently began strike action to protest potential compulsory redundancies, highlighting broader labour disputes over job cuts and changing business operations.
