‘Absolutely amazing’: Father, son reel in 10-foot great white off Florida coast in rare catch
The protected shark was released after a long fight, and a marine expert said great whites are increasing off the East Coast.
- On Monday, Donovan Smith and his father, Judd Smith, reeled in a 10-foot great white shark about a mile off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, while on a charter trip with Fishing Headquarters.
- Battling the shark in a fighting chair, Donovan struggled before his father, Judd, took over, fighting the fish for about 45 minutes before bringing it alongside the boat.
- Assisting the pair, Captain Paul Paolucci and mate Logan Graf of Fishing Headquarters noted the rare encounter was Graf's first in seven years on the water.
- Because great white sharks are a protected species, the crew released the animal after bringing it alongside the boat, a practice Catherine Macdonald of the University of Miami's Shark Research and Conservation Program supports.
- Data shows great white populations are increasing off the East Coast, a positive sign for recovery; Macdonald noted they typically avoid shallow waters, meaning beachgoers face minimal risk.
