Nigeria: Oyo Abduction - 'I'm the Only One She Has', Woman Demands Ward's Rescue

Families say abductors have refused talks with relatives and will only speak with Governor Seyi Makinde as rescue efforts continue.

  • On Friday, May 15, terrorists on motorcycles attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School in Ahoro-Esinele, and L.A. Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State, abducting pupils, teachers, and staff members.
  • Residents initially mistook the attackers, dressed as soldiers, for visitors; panic erupted shortly after 9 am when gunshots rang out, prompting the abduction of students and vice-principal Mrs Alamu Folawe.
  • The Defence Headquarters identified the attackers as suspected JAS terrorists displaced from the North-East. Families have continued to plead for government intervention 14 days after the incident.
  • Abductors opened communication with the Oyo State government but refused to negotiate with families, insisting they would only speak with Governor Seyi Makinde. The Elesinele, Tajudeen Abioye, appealed for divine intervention.
  • Governor Makinde's Special Adviser on Security, Abayomi Fagbenro, dismissed social media reports claiming victims had been rescued, describing them as false. Families continue to beg authorities to help free the abducted children.
